PDP COURSES for teachers
We are excited to expand our offerings with studio art courses for Teachers! Each of our courses is worth 15 Professional Development Points, as approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in December 2023.
Our program opens during Summer 2024, with a one-week course titled CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF NEW BEDFORD, Part 1.
The City of New Bedford serves as a community for so many creative talents! They work in myriad styles and materials, expressing deeply personal beliefs and experiences. Our goal for this series is to introduce teachers to these unique individuals so that they may inspire the teachers' own artwork and, by extension, the young students in their classrooms.
For this course, we will visit a professional artist whose studio is located in our building at Hatch Street Studios in New Bedford, to hear about their career and view their artwork. Then we will return to Catherine Carter Art School's classroom to create two projects inspired by some aspect of that artist's work, such as its style, materials, colors, theme, or subject matter. Project 1 will be the participant's personal expression in response to the inspiring artist, and Project 2 will be a prototype that the participant can assign to students in their own classroom. Each participant is provided with their own table and work space in our classroom to stay set up and create in throughout the week. The course wraps up with a group critique, and participants receive a certificate for completing the course.
The artist inspiration for this course is Heather Stivison, an award-winning visual artist whose work has been exhibited in museums, universities, and galleries across the United States and in juried shows in Europe and Asia. She is also a published author and is currently writing a second non-fiction book. Her mixed-media artworks combine drawing and painting techniques in which "narratives often evolve from my deep connection to environmental causes and social justice issues." Of her creative process, Heather says, "I tip the balance between abstraction and reality back and forth as a tool to enter into a new emotional piece."
